What Can & Cannot Go in a Dumpster in Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania's rules on what can and cannot go in a roll-off dumpster — banned materials, common mistakes, and what to do with the items we can't take.
Most of what fills a dumpster is completely fine — furniture, construction debris, general household junk. A short list of materials is banned everywhere in Pennsylvania because of how landfills are regulated, and knowing that list up front saves a surprise on pickup day.
What's always fine
Furniture, mattresses, boxes, cabinets, plaster, drywall, flooring, carpet, non-hazardous construction debris, yard waste and general household clutter are all standard loads. If you're not sure whether a specific item counts as "general debris," ask when you call — it's a normal question.
What's never allowed

The item people get wrong most often
Old paint cans are the single most common banned item people try to load without thinking twice. If it's genuinely dried solid, it's usually fine; if it still pours, it's liquid hazardous waste under Pennsylvania rules and needs a household hazardous waste drop-off instead. Chester County runs periodic household hazardous waste collection events — ask us and we'll point you to the current schedule.
What happens if a banned item ends up in the load
We inspect loads before disposal. If something banned turns up, we'll call you rather than just charge a fee silently — sometimes it's a simple pull-and-set-aside, sometimes it needs a separate disposal path. Being upfront about what's in the load when you book avoids almost all of this.
When you're not sure
Call before it goes in the container, not after. It costs nothing to ask and it's a lot faster than sorting a mixed load on pickup day.
