Roofing debris is one of the more predictable loads we handle, but it's also one where sizing mistakes are the most common — mostly because shingles are heavier than people expect. Here's the checklist we actually use on the phone.

Count the layers, not just the square footage

A single-layer tear-off on a standard-size roof usually fits a 20 yard comfortably. A double-layer tear-off — common on older Chester County homes where a second layer was added instead of a full strip years ago — roughly doubles the weight for the same square footage, which can push you toward the weight allowance faster than the volume fills up.

Slate roofs are their own category

Older homes inside West Chester's Historic District and some of the larger properties in the surrounding townships still carry original slate roofing. Slate is dramatically heavier than asphalt shingle by volume — a slate tear-off almost always needs a smaller, dedicated container sized around weight, not the roof's square footage.

Placement for a roofing job

Roofing debris usually gets thrown or chuted directly off the roof into the container, so placement close to the house matters more than it does for a typical cleanout. Tell us where the roofline sits relative to your driveway and we'll place the container to minimize how far debris has to travel.

Timing around the tear-off, not the whole project

Most roofing contractors want the container on site the morning tear-off starts and picked up within a day or two of completion, not sitting for a full week. We can schedule delivery and pickup around your roofer's actual timeline rather than defaulting to the standard rental period.
